Profile of Chester Porter QC

Chester Porter QC is universally acclaimed as one of Australia's most illustrious advocates. For more than 52 years he has brought to the Bar his consummate advocacy skills combined with an acerbic wit and a sharp legal mind. His many remarkable performances in court have led some observers to famously describe him as the "Smiling Funnelweb" and to claim that he "walked on water".

Chester Porter QC has been a barrister with the moral courage to question the criminal law. He has left an indelible mark in the area of criminal justice. He has both witnessed and been a part of changes to the criminal law to such an extent that it may be safely said that it is now more difficult to convict an innocent person today than was the case when he first went to the Bar.

At all times his integrity has remained intact, even when his legal battles were subjected to intense public scrutiny. To list but a few of his high profile engagements: he assisted Justice Morling in the Royal Commission into the wrongful convictions of Lindy and Michael Chamberlain; he represented the NSW Bar Association in the highly publicised proceedings to oppose Wendy Bacon's admission to the Bar; in 1985 he successfully defended Detective Sergeant Roger Rogerson on bribery charges; and in 1992 he appeared for the NSW Minister for the Environment, Tim Moore, in the ICAC inquiry into Dr Metherill's appointment to a position in the public service.

Chester Porter QC's recent publications include Walking on Water: A Life in the Law (2004), The Gentle Art of Persuasion (2005) and The Conviction of the Innocent: How the Law Can Let Us Down (2007).
