Message from the Head of School
Welcome to the School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, part of the College of Health and Science at the University of Western Sydney.
Our School brings together a large number of contemporary health science and biomedical science disciplines. Our undergraduate offerings include occupational therapy, podiatry, health promotion, sport and exercise science, health services management, social health studies, osteopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, naturopathy, therapeutic recreation, PDHPE (personal development, health, and physical education), medical science, biomolecular science, nanotechnology, and a specialist program in advanced science. In the postgraduate arena we have a range of courses available in public health, aged care management, health services management, naturopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, and acupuncture.
Postgraduate students also have the opportunity to undertake research degrees at either a Masters or PhD level.
Having both the clinical health sciences and the biomolecular and medical sciences under the single umbrella of the School arose from a strategic intention to provide cutting-edge and contemporary learning and research experiences for our students. This approach is strengthened further by a firm commitment to community engagement. Students are offered opportunities to work closely with their relevant communities in developing their professional skills, and in reaping the benefits of a challenging educational experience.
The School of Biomedical and Health Sciences is justifiably proud of its research pursuits. Our staff and students have strong and meaningful collaborations with research institutes, public and private health organisations, industry partners, and community organisations. Our research strengths include primary health care, occupational therapy, physical activity and health, men’s health, nanotechnology, molecular biology, drug design and synthesis, biomedical imaging, complementary medicine, and sport and exercise science. The work carried out by our Nanoscale Organisation and Dynamics Research Group, Men’s Health Information and Resource Centre, and the Centre for Complementary Medicine Research places us firmly on the world stage.
Our teaching and research facilities include specialist laboratories, a state-of-the-art nanotechnology facility, new sport and exercise science laboratories, and the Uniclinic which provides health services in podiatry, osteopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and massage.
On behalf of the school I invite you to contact us if you have questions about the School, our courses, or our research.

Capabilities
Expertise can be provided in a wide range of areas.
Our facilities underpin particular capabilities in:
We offer extensive experience in the application of functional genomics, ageing, neurodegenerative disease and cancer.
We have a major NMR facility and are renowned for work on NMR diffusion. We are encouraging the use of NMR and very high resolution MRI (i.e. NMR microscopy) in entomology, neuroscience, rheology, molecular association, materials, nanotechnology, plant science, well-logging, electrochemistry and surfactants.
For more information, please see Capabilities brochure (PDF, 894Kb).
The School of Biomedical and Health Sciences offers programs on Bankstown, Campbelltown, Hawkesbury, Parramatta and Penrith campuses. For information about the programs we offer and their availability, please see the College of Health and Science course directory.
The School was established in January 2006 from disciplines in the former School of Exercise and Health Sciences, School of Applied Social and Human Sciences, School of Education and School of Science, Food and Horticulture.
