Career Planning for Early Year Students

It is never too early to start thinking about your career options and investigating jobs which match your skills and interests. First, second and penultimate (second last year) students should talk to friends, family, lecturers and others working in their field. Research employers' websites, and attend Employer Presentations On Campus and Careers Expos to gather information about the type of work that is available.

Career Planning For Final Year Students

It is important that you are aware of the Graduate Recruitment Programs offered by many leading organisations. The recruitment process for most large organisations occurs throughout first semester and successful candidates complete their studies knowing they have a graduate position to take up the following February. Graduate recruitment for other organisations continues throughout the rest of the year. Attendance at Employer Presentations On Campus and Careers Expos is highly recommended for final year students.

It is also worthwhile considering joining a professional association while you are in your final year at University. It is often much cheaper to join as a student and membership is highly regarded by most employers. Read the newsletters, attend some of the functions and begin meeting people in your industry.
