Examination Results

The following outcomes are recommended after examination.

(A) That the degree be awarded
The examiner may recommend this category for a thesis which satisfies the requirements for the degree and which does not need to be amended.

(M) That the degree be awarded, subject to minor amendments (as identified by the examiners) to the satisfaction of the supervisory panel and the college Associate Dean (Research)
The examiner may specify this category for a thesis which requires the correction of editorial mistakes and minor typographical errors. Such amendments may include the correction of errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, the setting out of tables etc, or the clarification of points in the text. Changes should not entail further experimental work or substantial re-writing, merely editing of the text. Such changes would be carried out to the satisfaction of the principal supervisor and the college Associate Dean (Research).

R) That the candidate be required to undertake rewriting (as identified by the examiners) to the satisfaction of the supervisory panel and the college Associate Dean (Research) before the degree is awarded
The examiners should specify this category for a thesis where the rewriting involves more than editorial corrections. The candidate may have to rework some sections and make modifications to the thesis. Additional material may be required. The candidate may also be asked to attend to editorial corrections.

Such changes would be carried out to the satisfaction of the principal supervisor and the college Associate Dean (Research). The principal supervisor is required to provide the college Associate Dean (Research) with a written report detailing the changes undertaken.

(X) That the candidate be required to revise and resubmit the thesis for further examination within a specified time
The examiner may specify this category for a thesis which requires major amendments and re-submission of the thesis for examination. The candidate will be required to conduct further work, revise the text, and resubmit the thesis for examination. This category is to be used when the thesis shows some merit which may, by a limited amount of work, be sufficiently improved for resubmission. The examiner, in the written report, should give clear guidelines to the deficiencies in the work as it has been represented in the thesis.

A thesis that has undergone major revision after previous examination may not be recommended for this option a second time.

Examiners who recommend this outcome will be invited to examine the revised thesis. The second examination will be conducted on the basis of the instructions that were given to the candidate following the first examination.

(F) That the degree not be awarded
The examiner should NOT recommend this category for a thesis when a limited amount of additional work or modification could raise the thesis to an acceptable standard. This category is to be used when, clearly, the candidate has demonstrated that he or she has not presented sufficient evidence to warrant the award of the degree. The examiner is requested to detail fully the reasons for this recommendation.

The thesis may be submitted for a lesser degree.
