Biography

Dr Xiangdong Liu holds a BA from Beijing Foreign Studies University (China), an MA in Japanese Studies from University of Tsukuba (Japan) and a PhD in Japanese Linguistics from the University of Sydney (Australia). She also holds a Graduate Diploma in Interpreting and Translation (a NAATI approved course) from University of Western Sydney.

Her research interests are at the areas of Japanese linguistics, contrastive linguistics, intercultural communication, with a focus on pragmatics. Her teaching areas include Japanese language, linguistics, translation and interpreting. She was a winner of a UWS teaching award in 2014 and an Australian national teaching award in 2016.

Prior to her appointment at the University of Western Sydney, she worked as an interpreter and translator (Chinese <> Japanese) for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, and taught Japanese language at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Australia.
